They are good enough for hand carving but wouldn’t recommend hitting them with a wooden mallet. They cut and held an edge well but some of the shanks came loose enough for me to spin them inside the handle after a while even though they were still fairly tight. I suppose that could be corrected by peening the steel band around the shank.
